Free to start, painful to play.

Spellfall is the worst kind of mobile game. It starts off marvelously. But, quickly devolves into an exercise in frustration as Backflip Studios does everything in their power to get money out of you. If you refuse, then they drag you through Hell.

The first three character levels can each be reached in a reasonable amount of time. After that, no. Youll clear an entire board and only gain 1/3 of the experience needed for the next level. You can grind against bosses, to abate this, but only to a point. An update enables defeated enemies to "level up". So grinding for exp is strictly for a limited time only. Then theres the items.

Armor, weapons and runes are extremely expensive. Also, their prices go up as you gain levels. When youre at level 3, a healing rune may cost 10,000 coins. At level 4, the same rune costs 20,000 coins. The price keeps doubling for every character level. Items are randomly generated and are only available for seven battles before they disappear. Earning the amount needed to buy them before theyre gone isnt going to happen.

Each piece of armor and weaponry has slots for runes to be attached to. But most of the slots have to be unlocked with gold coins and the cost is staggering. So, out of sheer desperation, you start looking at IAP.

Well, the only IAP here is for set amounts of coins. There isnt any specialized gear or status boosts available. In other words, nothing you choose to spend actual money on can be restored if you need to reinstall Spellfall. Youre just throwing money away.

I wouldve gladly paid upwards of $9.99 for a balanced version of Spellfall. But, Backflip would rather nickel & dime folks. I dont know why they think their game is worth, based on IAP prices, over $100. I just know theyre wrong.

And, there wont likely be any further updates. Backflip has done everything they possibly can to stack this against the player and dip into their wallets. You want a quality fantasy themed match-3, scope Hero Emblems or Puzzle Quest and steer clear of this. You have been warned.
